Julio Torres directs Tilda Swinton, himself and RZA in this Gen Z satire where Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in NYC but he finds himself needing the employ of an erratic art critic to keep his visa.
A ‘Charlie Work’ movie made like a two hour SNL sketch. It actually has a lot of pliable tension and insight. Like a broke Devil Wears Prada with different pretensions. And Torres has enough self awareness to suggest no matter how demonic the late capitalist system is and the boomers with small shreds of power still are… the work visa should appeal to doctors and experts rather than people who just want to do ironic spins on Cabbage Patch Dolls. Does it even count as his idea to steal? It ain’t great art like an egg… Maybe we shouldn’t treat nations that don’t want us like the only place where our dream can come true.
