Duncan Jones directs Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux in this futuristic noir about a mute Amish bartender searching for his missing gal in the Berlin underworld.
Visually this starts strong (think a neon heavy Blade Runner), and the noir trappings are faithfully restored but it all peters out to nothing. An extraneous paedophilic subplot is introduced midway through that sits uncomfortably among the already unlikeable characters and off centre performance styles. It sours what would have been a forgivable, meandering mid-tier genre mash-up. The superior You Were Never Really Here covers a lot of the same ground strikingly better with nary a flying car in sight. There are a few nice nods to Jones’ superior Moon if you keep your eyes on the news screens in the background.
