Alexander Mackendrick directs Basil Radford, Bruce Seton and Joan Greenwood in this Ealing comedy where the population of a Scottish island defy wartime rationing by looting a wrecked cargo ship full of booze.
One of the earliest Black & White movies that landed with me as a teen trying to move beyond Star Wars and Arnie. The final half an hour is iconic and has a real desperate energy that builds and builds. Still a lot of fun though I do feel sorry for Radford’s sticky wicket as I get older, he is just trying to do the right thing, blind to the fact that even his superiors couldn’t care less.
