Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Robert Hiltzik directs Felissa Rose, Katherine Kamhi and Paul DeAngelo in this teen slasher with a hidden secret.

OK… so there is the notorious twist. Actually the twist is a little guessable but the reveal is monumental. Bad taste, full fat and just left hanging there… anguished scream, credits roll. As a slasher this is very par for the course circa ‘83. There are a couple of cheap pre-Lynchian moments but in general the horror is perfunctory. The actual teen stuff is leaned into gently but realistically… bullying, first love. And that kinda won me over more than Sleepaway Camp’s troubling, infamous last frame.
