Aki Kaurismäki directs Markku Toikka, Aino Seppo and Esko Nikkari in this Finnish modern update of Dostoevsky’s classic novel.

Apart from the time slip and a few motivational wrinkles, this is a pretty straight adaptation. Aino Seppo stands out as the woman who witnesses the murder but finds herself strangely attracted to the detached killer. Deadpan, as you’d expect from Kaurismäki… the house style isn’t fully developed yet but still a notable debut.
