Training Day (2001)

Antoine Fuqua directs Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Eva Mendes in this cop thriller where a rookie cop spends a shift with a corrupt superior who might be in deeper than even he can navigate.

“King Kong ain’t got shit on me!” I’ve only ever seen Training Day at the multiplex. There’s three flicks fighting each other here, two really good ones. Denzel playing against type in one of those strange big swing Oscar stealers that paid off. A sleazy little day-in-the-life indie anti-buddy cop character study road movie that is the meat of the movie. And a Hollywood action fantasy of life on the streets that is bombastic and silly and sucks any reality out of the finale. Which is a shame as Training Day when it is a showcase or a grimy two hander is a cracking good movie. When coincidence saves the day or the gangs are parting ways to let the white cop through with 2 mil out of a sense of community… nah?! Where did that bag of money end up? Maybe Hawke’s Hoyt ain’t as clean from his day with Alonso as the movie outwardly suggests.
